Automaker does its part to reduce speed-related car accidents

There are many common causes of car accidents that get a lot of attention: drunk driving, texting while driving and inattentive driving, just to name a few. But one of the most common and deadly causes of car accidents is a hazard that all drivers tend to take for granted: speeding.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, about 27 percent of car accident deaths in 2015 involved speeding. Driving too fast for conditions makes a collision both more likely to occur and more likely to be fatal.

Despite the risks, speeding is a major temptation for most drivers. Therefore, at least one automaker is addressing the problem by placing limits on just how fast we can go. Earlier this month, Swedish car company Volvo announced that it will soon be reducing top speeds on all its new vehicles to no more than 112 mph.

To be sure, the vast majority of crashes occur as speeds well below 112 mph. Moreover, Volvo isn’t really known as a thrill-seeker’s automaker. Nonetheless, the company’s move may be the start of a larger conversation “about whether car makers have the right or maybe even an obligation to install technology in cars that changes their driver's behavior,” according to Volvo’s CEO. Cars are increasingly adding safety features meant to compensate for human error or protect us from our own bad choices. Volvo’s decision to limit speeds seems to be an extension of that.

For the time being, each of us is responsible and liable for the way we drive, including the decision to speed. If you or a loved one has been seriously injured by a negligent, speeding driver, you have the right to seek appropriate compensation with the help of an experienced personal injury attorney.
